Fly Tying

Here you'll find some twists on familiar themes along with some flies original to Carl Hutchinson. We have included these flies as we have found a way of either improving them or tying them in an unconventional way Check back for more flies in a regular basis

The "Bellis"

The "Bellis"

This fly was a one of those end of evening flies that appears from whatever is left from the evening being incorporated into a fly. However, on this occasion it resulted in my most successful fly ever. I have no idea what the fish take it for or why it is so successful but if this fly is in a team of three, in any position, this fly will take the fish. Accounting for over 1000 trout per season for the last three season it's responsible for 80% of the Brown trout I catch.

Effect required.

Absolutely no idea. It just works.

Hook: Kamasan B175 or B170 (lighter wire)
Thread: Brown/Olive 6/0
Tail and Hackle: Veniards Olive Partridge 198IE
Body: Hareline dubbing Inc, Krystal Dub light Hares Ear (premixed) KD178
This is important. It must be this particular dubbing.

Tying Method.

It couldn't be simpler

1) Start the thread and wind to the back of the hook.
2) Tie in 3-4 partridge hackle fibres as a tail.
3) Dub the hairs ear dubbing onto the thread and wind the dubbing up to the eye creating a fairly slim body
4) Tie in the partridge hackle by the tip having stroked the fibres out.
5) Wind two turns of hackle and tie off in the usual manner.
